Thought the burger boom was over? Convinced that you’ve had every type of burger imaginable by now? A new restaurant in Buckhead is out to prove you wrong.

Big Al’s Butter Made Burgers opened recently at The Shops of Buckhead, less than 1,000 feet south of Holeman and Finch Public House, still widely regarded as the home of one of the best burgers in the United States. Big Al’s may not have the same level of recognition, but the offerings from their lunch and late-night menu definitely hit the spot when you’re in the mood for a different kind of burger experience.

Midwesterners are well-versed in the ways of the butter burger, a Dairy Belt concoction that puts butter directly inside a beef patty for a richness and juiciness that’s hard to duplicate any other way. Solly’s Grille in Milwaukee, is world-renowned for its 80-year-old recipe, and the Culver’s chain brings a fast-food iteration to 22 states nationwide. Locally, though, the butter burger is a rare beast; Steak n’ Shake has previously featured a version, and chef Ford Fry offers a notable high-end take at The Optimist.

Big Al’s, though, devotes the entire lineup to the butter burger. Order one of six beef burgers (all available as a single, double, or triple), and a ball of all-natural Angus beef hits the flat top grill, where it’s pressed into a thin patty. After flipping, a dollop of hand-churned butter is scooped on top to melt, seeping into the meat itself as it finishes cooking. Even the buns get a slathering of liquid gold before being toasted to a golden brown.

Most of the burger varieties are fairly straightforward when it comes to toppings, although the unique Best of Both Worlds stacks a beef patty and a marinated chicken breast under one soft, squishy bun. Everything we’ve sampled thus far has been juicy and melty and sloppy and just what the doctor ordered for a quick lunch or late-night snack attack.

Big Al’s also offers Nathan’s hot dogs and chicken sandwiches, plus well-done French fries and battered onion rings, even fried green tomatoes. Get beer and wine from the bar, round out your meal with a milkshake or earthquake (like a sundae, with toppings such as Oreo cookies, strawberry puree, or Cinnamon Toast Crunch breakfast cereal), or top off your evening with an adult milkshake that blends Big Al’s frozen custard with the liqueur flavor of the week.

In between linen-napkin dining and order-by-number fast food, Big Al’s plays in that same fast-casual space as Five Guys or Smashburger. We would argue that they do several things better than both of those brands, and make a worthy addition to Atlanta’s burger landscape.
